The adaptation of the best-selling novel “The Help” leads the way in the 2012 SAG Awards, with four nominations. The nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles, and I am so excited because I’ve been a bit of a movie junkie this year, so I actually know how most of these movies are, and I am so excited for “The Help” it truly was the best adaptation and one of the best movies of 2011. Kathryn Stockett must be very happy today!
Based on what it’s like to be a maid in Jackson, Mississippi in the 60s, “The Help” centers around three people, Aibileen (Viola Davis), a black maid, Minny (Octavia Spencer), Aibleen’s best friend and also a maid, the sassiest, best cooking one you’ll ever meet, and Skeeter (Emma Stone), the 23 year-old girl who’s recently graduated from Ole Miss. The book seamlessly weaves the lives of not only these three, but of Jackson in the time period to tell a riveting story that, while it may not be a “true story” is true enough to stir your emotions. The movie, which is directed by Tate Taylor, an old school friend of Stockett’s, does a great job of taking the book and turning it into a movie, with few hiccups along the way. Obviously, the committee thought the same thing I did – recognizing the film for Best Picture, Viola Davis for Best Actress, and both Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain for Best Supporting Actress.
The full list of nominations are below, but here are a few of my thoughts:
In Best Actor, I think that it might actually be Brad Pitt’s year with the hit, Moneyball. Secretly, or not so secretly, I think most Hollywood actors are now going out for the “true life” stories, because they all saw the Oscar that Sandra Bullock got in “The Blind Side” (which by the way is one of my absolute favorite movies). My first thought was obviously, Leonardo DiCaprio for his role of J. Edgar Hoover in “J. Edgar” but after seeing it, I’m not so sure. He was great, but the movie was stilted, and not as great as I thought it would be. George Clooney in “The Descendants” might pose a threat, however, I’m still seeing Brad.
The Best Actress category is wide open. Seriously, you couldn’t find more talented actresses in this year’s nominations. I still haven’t seen “My Week With Marilyn” but just from the trailers, Michelle Williams looks brilliant. Then there’s Viola Davis in “The Help” which I’m obviously pulling for, but then there’s always the great, Meryl Streep, in “The Iron Lady” which has been getting a ton of buzz news.
As for the television categories, I’m so bummed that Once Upon A Time is still too new to get nominated for Best Drama and Lara Parrilla (Regina/Evil Queen) for Best Dramatic Actress – because I’ve never hated anyone more in my life! And as for the “Best Comedy” section – can’t we get some new names in there? It just seems that all five of them, Modern Family, 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Glee and The Office are always nominated!
And lastly, I’m sure that “Too Big To Fail” will be the winning miniseries, because isn’t it always like Hollywood to make political statements? However, I think “Mildred Pierce” is far superior!
The SAG Awards will be presented January 29th. So, what are your thoughts? Who do you see walking home with the awards??
